GREENSBORO - For the third time in the month of December the Greensboro Generals have scored at least six goals, as they defeated the South Carolina Stingrays 7-2, maintaining a tie for second place in the divisional standings.

The Generals started out fast, netting the games first goal just 34 seconds into the first period, as right-wing Chester Gallant sent home his second goal in as many home games. Gallant took advantage of a feed from teammates Mark Turner and Tom Reimann. The Stingrays (14-11-1) answered later in the period, when on a power-play conversion Kevin Spiewak sent a laser shot past the outstretched glove of netminder Daniel Berthiaume knotting the game at 1-1.

In the second, the Generals (16-10-1) Matt Turek provided the only goal of the period, when he and Matt Elich took advantage of a breakaway opportunity to give Greensboro a 2-1 advantage. Facing just 12 shots on goal in the period, Berthiaume continued his stellar goaltending, denying the Stingrays on their only power-play opportunity of the frame.

The third period proved to be the shootout for Greensboro, when the Generals would score five goals, beginning with a short-handed goal by Eric Fortier at the 4:08 mark. Fortier scored his team-high 13th goal of the season, off an unassisted goal. Captain Mark Turner would then get into the act himself with a shorthanded goal just under two minutes later. Greensboro continued its offensive push when Chester Gallant sent the puck past the Stingrays Kirk Daubenspeck for his second goal of the game.

After three consecutive goals to open the third period scoring by the Generals, South Carolina retaliated with a goal by Jason Bonsignore. However, Greensboro offense was not about to relinquish its scoring touch, as Mike Bayrack got into the act when he scored his 11th goal of the season, off assists from Kurt Drummond and Gallant. Closing out scoring, with just 17 seconds remaining on the clock, Gallant recorded the first hat-trick of his professional career, sending the Generals fans to their feet with a 7-2 victory.

The Generals defensive unit was also a major contributing factor to the victory over South Carolina. Led by netminder Daniel Berthiaume’s 42 save performance, defenseman Kurt Drummond also registered three assists, and recent All-Star selection Tom Reimann also contributed his 14th assist of the season.

Greensboro returns to the road when they travel to Roanoke on Sunday, December 21st, to take on the Express. The Generals will not return to the Greensboro Coliseum until December 26th, when they face-off against the Greenville Grrrowl. Fans will have an opportunity to participate in the “What I really wanted for Christmas gift” contest that will give the fans an opportunity to return unwanted gifts for $2 discount on ticket price. All gifts returned will be given to Family Services of the Piedmont.
