November 15, 2003 ECHL Game #176 Home Game # 7 Referee: Chris Brown Linesmen: Jason Finlev, Jason Steen National Anthem: Donald Griffin Q & A with DON CARTER Q: Fondest memory of Greensboro? A: "Most important as a player is that we had the best rink in the league. The teams from the Northern Division enjoyed coming down to play against us. I always enjoyed the fans, and they enjoyed my style of play, so I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Greensboro. While we only won one championship (1962-63), and while we only won the one, we should have won at least four providing the team we had." Q: The game that sticks out most in your mind as a Greensboro General? A: "The first was a player's night they held for me commerating my 500th career game. The second would definitely be the "Hinchberger Fight". (Defensemen, for Nashville). And on that night, I fought (Lloyd) Hinchberger, and everyone else just stood there and watched me. However, every game was great to play in front of the fans of Greensboro." Q: Who is the best player that you ever played against in your 20-years of playing hockey? A: "In that league there was quite a few. The one that sticks out most was Chucky Stuart (Knoxville), a center that could really score goals. In the final game of a best-of-five series, we were up 2-1 with 15 seconds to go, he scored a goal, then Knoxville won the face-off and again he put a shot on net, scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining, and we got put out of the playoffs. There were a lot of guys in the league that could have played in the NHL, but there were only six NHL teams at that time." Q: As one the pioneers for hockey in Greensboro, did you ever imagine it reaching the popularity that it has? A: "When we first went down to Greensboro, I never talked in front of people in my life. Carson Bain talked me into speaking at a civic club. We taught people the game in high schools. We had the dedicated fans, and we really reached out to the community. In '63 the Russians came and played us, and in 1964 I went for 20-days to Russia with a group of all-stars from the league, and I came back and gave talks at several civic clubs about my experience." Q: Are you still involved in the game? A: "I started playing in the 35-and-older league, and now I play in the 50-and-older league. Being that they are 50, and from Canada, they can still motor around, so with no contact it still makes it nice for me." Q: What piece of knowledge would you pass on to current Generals players to lengthen their careers? A: "For one thing, these guys are in better shape that what we are in. They have the advantage of lifting weights, whereas we were told that we were going to get hurt if we did just that. Seeing as how there is such a minute step between the ECHL, the AHL, and the IHL, the harder that you work, the better chance that you have of making it happen in your career. The biggest thing is to get your education, and make sure that you go to college to educate yourself for things that will occur after your playing days are through." ALSO "APPEARING": In addition to Carter's induction ceremony, "Anniversary Night" also on-hand will be a host of former Monarchs and Generals players including (years with Generals/Monarchs): Harvard Turnbull (1962-64, 1966-67), John Voss (1966-68, 1975-76), Stu Roberts (1967-71, 1971-76), Bill Young (1967~70), Ron Hindson (1971-75), Bob Wright (1973-76), Cam Colborn (1974-77), Phil Berger (1989-91, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1999-00), Jamie Nicolls (1989-90, 1992-94), Darryl Noren (1990-1995), EJ Sauer (1989-90), Bill Horn (1992-93, 1994-95) and Dean Zayonce (1991-95, 1996-97, 1999-00).
